In this era of climate change, protecting the biodiversity on the planet is regarded as one of the most vital long-term goals of all humankind. Biodiversity is fundamental to the survival of any ecosystem as it plays a major role in water and air purification. It also assists us in alleviating climate change effects and ensures that food production remains secure and unscathed. Hence, Aroundtown is firm in its resolve to the conservation and safeguard of biodiversity.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

The company’s ‘Aroundtown Hums’ mission has taken steps to ensure that bees continue to live and thrive in urban areas. The project will be later spread to numerous other buildings, towns, and cities over the next few years. The aim of the undertaking is to double the bee colony numbers every year.

A registered beekeeper was already on the payrolls of the company. Since the spring of last year, the beekeeper has already successfully created nearly 20 economic colonies and almost 10 fledgling colonies on the terraces of commercial buildings owned by Aroundtown in and around the city of Berlin.

Torsten Hernández Trigo was appointed by Aroundtown as its full-time beekeeper with the launch of the new project.  He is a licensed beekeeper and a member of the Berlin-Reinickendorf Beekeepers Association. Over the past three years, he has been tending to his own bee colonies in his free time.

By the end of 2020, the first harvest of Aroundtown’s initiative produced about 339 kgs of urban honey. On Saint Nicholas Day, this honey was distributed as a gift to the employees in the company.
