Arts education now compulsory for CBSE students for classes 1 to 12

In an effort to create a syllabus that is beyond the traditional compartmentised learning scenario, the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) has now decided that arts will be a mandatory subject for students studying in Class 1 all the way to Class 12. This change shall start with the upcoming academic year. All school students shall experience“Art-Integrated Learning” that provides better outcomes.

The schools that are CBSE affiliated will now follow this latest padgogy for teaching basic education. Additionally, every school under CBSE are to compulsorily keep aside two periods every week for the art education.  All 4 mains streams that are covered under “Arts” like dance, music, theatre, and visual arts needs to be included in the syllabus.

Students between Class 6 and Class 8 shall also be taught the culinary arts apart from these 4 streams. In the culinary arts, the students shall be taught things such as nutrition, crops, pesticide use, agricultural practices, etc. Schools will be required to create their very own process to dispatch this education. These subjects shall come with an evaluation that is non-examination based & process-oriented. This implies that no examination shall be conducted for the same and the understanding shall be evaluated based on theory, practical and project work.
