How Patrick Transferred His Skills From UPS To Running His Own Advisory Firm

Patrick Tucker is the founder of True Measure Wealth Management, an independent RIA based in Omaha, Nebraska, which guides and helps a significant fraction of clients. He coaches young and elderly on becoming smarter and wiser with money and ways to channel their Financial standings into more remarkable appreciations. What brings light to Patrick’s journey is his business and financial management experience that kickstarted with his shiny career at UPS.

Patrick engrossed himself in learning his work around the table. While some feel home to a stable job, Patrick knew he had a greater goal and pursued his calling rightfully. He had confidence in his skills and knew he could crush it with his own business. So, he decided to quit working at UPS and made a career switch to what he knows best – Financial advisory. Soon after, Patrick started running his consulting firm to achieve his goals.

So, how did he go from working for UPS to running True Measure Wealth Management?

It all started with Patrick’s first-ever job when he was in college and hunting for a breakthrough. On his internship quest, he rushed to UPS and got signed up. His work entailed loading the trucks and some manual jobs for the summer. UPS rarely hires college students, and it’s a matter of worth for those who start their career with UPS.

Patrick didn’t just start his career there – he ended up sticking with the company for 11 whole years. At this time, Patrick got himself mastered in the Finance Management group, outperforming all his roles from corporate accounting to auditing and managing inventory to 401K Administration. This surely invigorated his work experience. Things started to change for him when he was at his last job.

“The company previously operated accounting offices in almost every state. They had regions of the country called districts, and they were mostly located within the state’s border”, shares Patrick.

Eventually, the company decided to start merging accounting. Such internal changes and effects that were being made led to downsizing. He said, “Since the company was bringing the segregated offices at one place, they had to fire people, and I was the one who had to take charge of it.”

Being the people’s person that Patrick is, it was something he was highly reluctant to do. As Patrick continues sharing, “My disinclined behavior towards firing people didn’t come as a surprise since I’ve always been an appreciator, helping managers and employees with numerous solutions. Calculating contributors, their inventory plans, keeping hold of the team, recognizing good work – that’s what defined my leadership.”

How A Downsizing At UPS Opened Patrick’s Eyes To A Bigger Opportunity

During that course, Patrick perceived investment management as a by-product and enrolled in some security courses at American College. When the firing process took place, he noticed that they had to bring in lawyers, financial advisors, and a whole team to help in the process of firing. That’s when Patrick saw a potential career opportunity – and his entire life changed.

Patrick threw in his resignation letter at UPS and joined American Express in an executive position. His career really took off from there as his job profile entailed training new advisors in the firm. The irony here is, Patrick himself has never been an advisor; it was purely his talents and deep inclination towards the opportunity that landed him this career shift.

The key to becoming a successful entrepreneur is being excellent at networking. Patrick always knew his way and words around people, and his professional excellence got him another opportunity that fixed him with a giant leap in his career.

Patrick got a call from a local, regional bank, and soon after, he started working for a financial consulting firm. Through this job, he absorbed all that’s there to learn about financial consulting, not to discredit that his previous experience at UPS also instigated his diverse knowledge in the field. Having worked at several companies, he had built a strong network of acquaintances, and people recognized him for his humble personality and professional mastery.

The Road To Owning A Successful Financial Advisory Firm

In 2001, he stumbled upon a local broker-dealer that agreed to keep some of Patrick’s insurance and a fraction of the business he needed as a registered representative. There was no looking back from that point as Patrick Tucker started his own RIA and burned all the midnight oil to make his venture exceptional. He had a vision, and they were about to come to reality.

Soon after a few years, in 2006, Tucker gave up all his licenses and, in the early 2000s, left only to pay as an investment advisor registered with the SEC. The mission had left its deck, and the ship sailed towards the life of Riley.

This upcoming agency, founded and managed by Patrick, had its showtime in its early days. “It was really inexpensive to have an insurance agency. $75 a year in Nebraska, and it was back in the early 2000s. So yeah, I did offer a fixed. And yes, it was incredibly cheap. I provided all selected insurance solutions through this agency for several years” shares, Patrick.

Eventually, when his work started gaining dense traction, he moved into offering paid services. For the majority of his tenure as an independent director, he had been on the fiduciary side of the case since 2001.

There were countless instances of struggle, things got topsy turvy at some moments, but the rough ride got him closer to establishing his advisory firm. He was no stranger to legal issues, pressure situations, and sleepless nights but that carved out a healthier and more determined entrepreneur out of him. Patrick continued, taking the good out of his mistakes and making things happen, one at a time.

“The one thing I’ve learned is never to give up,” says the man who has an inspiring story and financial advice to give out to the world. True Measure Wealth Management is now an advisory company founded upon the essence of learning, a passion for teaching, and allegiance to doing good by our community and the world.

Today, Patrick is doing a phenomenal job in helping people, practicing his virtues to better society, and helping people grow.
